History

Harold Zagorin

Harold Zagorin founded Portland English as a Second Language Scholarship Fund with his friend Beverly Stearns in 2000. They felt this program would be important to Portland because of its status as a refugee site since the 1970s. Harold once stated about his motives: “I had the time, interest and resources and thought, ‘Why not?’”

Harold is the son of immigrant parents from Vilnius, Lithuania. His parents came to the United States just before the turn of the century. Harold had successful careers as a meteorologist and chemical engineer before retiring to Maine.

In 2000, Harold launched the Portland English as a Second Language Scholarship Fund with an initial investment of $54,000. Years later, The Fund is still going strong and providing Portland’s refugee and immigrant community with an opportunity to learn English.
